廣州六榕寺 Guangzhou Six Banyans Trees Temple
Temple of Six Banyan Trees is located on Zhongshan Liu Lu. Built in the 3rd year of Datong Reign of Liang Dynasty (573 AD) and with a history of over 1,400 years, Temple of Six Banyan Trees is one of the most noted historical relics in Guangzhou. In the very center of the temple stands the flowery pagoda measuring 57 meters tall, in a shape of eleven angles, counting 9 floors from outside and 17 floors inside. To the east of the pagoda lie Mountain Gate, Smiling Buddha and Tianwang Hall, Weituo Hall, the Portrait of Su Dongpo (famous poet and calligrapher of Song Dynasty) and about a dozen of steles with the inscriptions relating to six banyan trees.
To the west of the pagoda are Daxiong Baodian Hall—the main hall of the temple. About 14 meters tall and covering an area of 300 m2, the hall is home to the three biggest copper Buddhist statues made in the 2nd year of Emperor Kangxi's Reign of the Qing Dynasty (1663 AD). Measuring 6 meters tall and weighing 10 tons each, the kind-looking statues are by far the earliest cooper statues in Guangdong Province. Other celebrated buildings include Banyan Trees Garden, Six Ancestral Hall, Kwan-Yin Hall, Dormitory and Refectory of the Monks, Merits and Virtue Hall and the Depositary Pavilion of Buddhist Scriptures.
